Car and auto accidents in Escondido

According to the City's Bicycle Facilities Master Plan, Interstate 15 bisects Escondido from north to south. State Route 78 crosses the city from east to west and changes from a freeway to surface streets on the way through. The same plan names Centre City Parkway, Escondido Boulevard and Broadway as north-south major roadways, and Valley Parkway and Washington Avenue among the major east-west streets. This page covers crashes on all of these roads, on Bear Valley Parkway, and on the downtown Escondido streets around Grand Avenue.

Caltrans says growth along the SR-78 corridor in Escondido and San Marcos has strained the corridor's connections to I-15. Its I-15/SR-78 connector project is still in environmental review, with construction listed for 2030 to 2035, pending funding. Photos taken on the day of your crash show the lanes, ramps and signs as they were.

Who takes the police report after an Escondido crash?

Escondido has its own police force. For a crash on Escondido's city streets, the Escondido Police Department usually responds. Its headquarters is at 1163 Centre City Parkway, (760) 839-4722, and its Traffic Division investigates collisions and follows up on hit-and-runs. Crashes on I-15 or the SR-78 freeway are usually handled by the California Highway Patrol's Oceanside Area office, which patrols both from 435 La Tortuga in Vista, (760) 643-3400. Where SR-78 runs on surface streets through Escondido, city police usually take the report, because CHP's primary crash jurisdiction covers state highways built as freeways (Vehicle Code §2400(d)).

To get an Escondido Police collision report, fill out the department's Application for Release of Traffic/Crime Report Information (form ESPD 122) at its Business Office and bring valid ID. The fee is $15 per report, paid in cash or by check, and the department says processing takes four to 10 business days. CHP reports are requested with form CHP 190.

Which hospitals near Escondido have trauma care?

Escondido has a trauma center inside the city. Palomar UC San Diego Health Escondido, at 2185 Citracado Parkway, is a Level II trauma center. Palomar Health and UC San Diego Health formed a joint powers authority in July 2026, which lets the two public health agencies run hospitals and clinics together. Farther south, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla runs a Level I trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons. Paramedics decide where you go. For your claim, get checked the same day and keep every record and bill.

Insurance after an Escondido crash

Since January 1, 2025, California drivers must carry at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injuries, plus $15,000 for property damage. A serious injury can cost more than $30,000. When it does, your own underinsured motorist coverage may help. Once the other driver's insurer pays its full limit, and only if your limit is higher, your policy pays up to your limit minus what they paid.

If a big rig or delivery truck hit you on I-15, SR-78 or an Escondido street, a commercial policy may apply. Federal rules require most for-hire carriers hauling general freight across state lines, in trucks rated at 10,001 pounds or more, to carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage (49 C.F.R. §387.9). Those minimums do not apply to vehicles rated under 10,001 pounds or to purely in-state carriers (49 C.F.R. §387.3), so a local delivery van may fall under different rules. Interstate trucks must also show the carrier's name and USDOT number on both sides (49 C.F.R. §390.21T), so photograph both before the truck leaves.

If the driver who hit you was in a rental car, more than one policy can apply: the driver's own policy, any coverage bought at the rental counter, and your own coverage. Under a federal law, 49 U.S.C. §30106, a rental company is generally not liable just because it owns the car, unless the company itself was negligent or committed criminal wrongdoing.

If anyone was hurt, or damage tops $1,000, each driver must also file form SR-1 with the DMV within 10 days. That is separate from the police report.

What if you were partly at fault for the crash?

California uses comparative fault, so being partly at fault for a crash does not by itself bar your claim. Your damages are reduced by your percentage of responsibility (CACI No. 405; Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804). Photos, video and witness names help show how the crash happened.

  • Auto accident: $500,000, policy limits. First offer: $6,500.
  • Auto accident: $350,000. First offer: $75,000.

Pedestrian and bicycle accidents in Escondido

The City's Local Roadway Safety Plan counted 251 pedestrian-involved and 191 bicycle-involved crashes in Escondido from January 2016 through December 2020, including 9 fatal pedestrian crashes. Ash Street at Valley Parkway, a Caltrans facility, had the most pedestrian and bicycle crashes of any intersection: seven pedestrian and three bicycle.

In July 2019 the City finished the Escondido Creek Bikeway "Missing Link" project, a bikeway separated from car traffic through the core of Escondido. The project added a traffic signal at North Broadway and Woodward Avenue and a signalized crosswalk on North Broadway next to Grape Day Park. California law requires drivers to give a bicycle at least three feet when passing (Vehicle Code §21760). If an insurer says you were partly to blame, comparative fault reduces your damages by your share of responsibility and does not by itself bar your claim (CACI No. 405). Many camera systems record over old footage within days, so ask the businesses facing the spot for video quickly. Pedestrian accidents · Bicycle accidents

Uber and Lyft accidents in Escondido

Rideshare coverage depends on what the driver's app showed at the moment of the crash.

Driver's app status Coverage California requires
Logged in, waiting for a ride request $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident for injury or death, $30,000 for property damage, plus $200,000 in excess coverage
Ride accepted, through the end of the trip $1,000,000 for injury, death and property damage, carried by the driver, the company, or both
Passenger in the car The company's uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage: $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident since January 1, 2026 (it was $1,000,000)

Amounts are from Public Utilities Code §5433, as amended by SB 371 (2025). For a rideshare crash on Escondido's city streets, such as Valley Parkway or Escondido Boulevard, the Escondido Police Department usually takes the report; on I-15 or the SR-78 freeway, CHP's Oceanside Area office usually does. If you were the passenger, screenshot the trip in your app before you close it. Uber and Lyft accidents

Motorcycle accidents in Escondido

Riders in Escondido share I-15, SR-78, Centre City Parkway and Valley Parkway with commuter traffic. California law recognizes lane splitting, defined as riding a two-wheeled motorcycle between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane (Vehicle Code §21658.1). Insurers often blame the rider anyway. The Escondido Police Traffic Division investigates collisions on city streets, and CHP's Oceanside Area office covers the freeways. Their report, dash-camera and business video, witness names and photos of the damage to both vehicles show how the crash happened. Motorcycle accidents

Slip and fall and premises injuries in Escondido

Falls in Escondido happen in shops, restaurants, hotels and rentals, and on public property such as Kit Carson Park at 3333 Bear Valley Parkway. The City of Escondido acquired that land in 1967 for its largest regional park. Who owns the spot matters. For a business or private home, you generally have two years to file suit. For City, County or state property, a written government claim is usually due within six months (Government Code §911.2), and the usual pause for children does not apply to it. The City's claim form goes to the City Clerk at 201 North Broadway, and the form itself says an injury claim must be filed within six months of the incident. Photograph the hazard and your shoes, and keep the receipt or booking that shows you were there. Slip and fall accidents

Dog bites in Escondido

California holds a dog's owner liable for a bite in a public place, or on private property where you were lawfully present, even if the dog never bit anyone before (Civil Code §3342). That covers a bite on an Escondido sidewalk, at a park, or at a home you were invited into. In Escondido, the San Diego Humane Society provides animal control under contract with the City, and its Escondido report for July 2023 through June 2024 lists 198 bite reports. To report a biting dog, call its dispatch at (619) 299-7012 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., or the Escondido Police Communications Center at (760) 839-4722 at other times. If a dog bites you at the City's Mayflower Dog Park, get the owner's name and phone number before you leave. Photograph the bite on the day it happens and again as it heals, so the record shows any scarring. Dog bites

Wrongful death claims for Escondido families

When a crash or fall in Escondido takes a life, California lets the surviving spouse or domestic partner and children bring a wrongful death claim. In some cases others, such as heirs or dependents, can bring one too (Code of Civil Procedure §377.60). The deadline is generally two years, or six months for a claim against a public entity such as the City of Escondido. On city streets, Escondido Police Traffic Division officers are trained to investigate collisions involving serious injury or death, and CHP usually handles crashes on I-15 and the SR-78 freeway. For Escondido ZIP codes, the San Diego Superior Court's ZIP code list assigns the North County Division, whose courthouse is at 325 South Melrose Drive in Vista. The consultation is free and our fee is a percentage of the settlement. If we do not win, you owe nothing: no attorney fee and no repayment of costs. Wrongful death

Brain injury claims after Escondido accidents

Head injuries from a crash on Centre City Parkway or a fall at an Escondido park can seem mild at first and get worse over the following weeks. If you were treated at Palomar UC San Diego Health Escondido, a Level II trauma center on Citracado Parkway, or at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, ask for copies of your imaging and records from that first visit. Insurers often argue a concussion has healed, so keep a dated log of your symptoms, treatment and missed work from the start. Brain injury
