Car and auto accidents in Mission Valley
Five freeways serve Mission Valley: I-5, I-8, I-15, I-805 and SR-163, according to the transportation analysis prepared for the City of San Diego's Mission Valley Community Plan Update. The same analysis named parts of Friars Road, Camino de la Reina, Camino del Rio North and South, and Hotel Circle North and South as east-west links that run poorly at peak hours, and found Mission Center Road had some of the worst evening intersection congestion in the community. This page covers crashes on all of these roads and on the streets around Fashion Valley, Hazard Center and Rio San Diego Drive.
That analysis uses 2015 data, and the City Council adopted the updated Mission Valley Community Plan on September 10, 2019, so a road may look different today. Photos taken on the day of your crash show what was there.
Who takes the police report after a Mission Valley crash?
Mission Valley is split between two San Diego Police Department divisions. SDPD lists Mission Valley West in its Western Division and Mission Valley East in its Eastern Division. The Western Division's number is (619) 692-4800 and the Eastern Division's is (858) 495-7900, according to SDPD's contact page. Which one takes the report on Mission Valley's city streets depends on where the crash happened, so ask the officer for the division and the report number before you leave. Crashes on I-8, SR-163, I-805 or I-15 are usually handled by the California Highway Patrol's San Diego Area office at 5902 Kearny Villa Road, (858) 293-6000.
You can request an SDPD collision report three to 10 business days after the crash, online through LexisNexis eCrash, by mail, or in person at the SDPD Records Division, 1401 Broadway. Mail and in-person copies cost $12. CHP reports are requested with form CHP 190.
Which hospitals near Mission Valley have trauma care?
Three trauma centers are about 2 to 3 miles by car from Hazard Center. Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest, is a Level I trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons. UC San Diego Health's Hillcrest emergency department also has a Level 1 trauma center. Sharp Memorial Hospital on Frost Street is a Level II trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons. Paramedics decide where you go. For your claim, get checked the same day and keep every record and bill.
Insurance after a Mission Valley crash
Since January 1, 2025, California drivers must carry at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injuries, plus $15,000 for property damage. A serious injury can cost more than $30,000. When it does, your own underinsured motorist coverage may help. Once the other driver's insurer pays its full limit, and only if your limit is higher, your policy pays up to your limit minus what they paid.
With five freeways meeting in Mission Valley, the driver who hit you may have been passing through, sometimes in a rental car. If so, more than one policy can apply: the driver's own policy, any coverage bought at the rental counter, and your own coverage. Under a federal law, 49 U.S.C. §30106, a rental company is generally not liable just because it owns the car, unless the company itself was negligent or committed criminal wrongdoing.
If anyone was hurt, or damage tops $1,000, each driver must also file form SR-1 with the DMV within 10 days. That is separate from the police report.

What if you were partly at fault for the crash?
California uses comparative fault, so being partly at fault for a crash does not by itself bar your claim. Your damages are reduced by your percentage of responsibility (CACI No. 405; Li v. Yellow Cab Co. (1975) 13 Cal.3d 804). Photos, video and witness names help show how the crash happened.
- Auto accident: $500,000, policy limits. First offer: $6,500.
- Auto accident: $350,000. First offer: $75,000.

Pedestrian and bicycle accidents in Mission Valley
The Green Line trolley crosses Mission Valley, with stops at Fashion Valley Transit Center, Hazard Center, Mission Valley Center, Rio Vista, Fenton Parkway and Stadium. The analysis, based on 2015 data, found the most pedestrian collisions in central Mission Valley, between SR-163 and I-805. It listed four intersections with two or more pedestrian collisions in five years: Friars Road at Frazee Road, Hazard Center Drive at Frazee Road, Rio San Diego Drive at Qualcomm Way, and Camino Del Rio South at Qualcomm Way.
For bicycles, it flagged Rio San Diego Drive at Station Village Way and Qualcomm Way/Texas Street at Camino Del Rio South. California law requires drivers to give a bicycle at least three feet when passing (Vehicle Code §21760). Many camera systems record over old footage within days, so ask the shops, garages and apartment buildings facing the spot for video quickly. Pedestrian accidents · Bicycle accidents
Uber and Lyft accidents in Mission Valley
Rideshare coverage depends on what the driver's app showed at the moment of the crash.
| Driver's app status | Coverage California requires |
|---|---|
| Logged in, waiting for a ride request | $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident for injury or death, $30,000 for property damage, plus $200,000 in excess coverage |
| Ride accepted, through the end of the trip | $1,000,000 for injury, death and property damage, carried by the driver, the company, or both |
| Passenger in the car | The company's uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage: $60,000 per person and $300,000 per incident since January 1, 2026 (it was $1,000,000) |
Amounts are from Public Utilities Code §5433, as amended by SB 371 (2025). For a rideshare crash on Mission Valley's city streets, SDPD's Western or Eastern Division usually takes the report, depending on the location; on I-8, SR-163, I-805 or I-15, CHP's San Diego Area office usually does. On Snapdragon Stadium event days, the stadium says rideshare drop-offs and pickups are welcome on Mission Village Drive, just north of Jacaranda Street, inside Gate 1. If you were the passenger, screenshot the trip in your app. Uber and Lyft accidents
Motorcycle accidents in Mission Valley
Riders in Mission Valley share I-8, SR-163, I-805 and I-15 with commuter traffic, and Friars Road and Camino del Rio with drivers turning in and out of shopping centers. California law recognizes lane splitting, defined as riding a two-wheeled motorcycle between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane (Vehicle Code §21658.1). Insurers often blame the rider anyway. The CHP or SDPD report, dash-camera and business video, witness names and photos of the damage to both vehicles show how the crash happened. Slip and fall and premises injuries in Mission Valley
Falls in Mission Valley happen in shopping centers such as Fashion Valley and Hazard Center, in stores, restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes, and on public land such as the Mission Valley Preserve, 52 acres of the San Diego River Park that the City of San Diego's Park and Recreation Department manages as open space. Who owns the spot matters. For a business or private home, you generally have two years to file suit. For City, County or state property, a written government claim is usually due within six months (Government Code §911.2), and the usual pause for children does not apply to it. Photograph the hazard and your shoes, and keep the receipt or parking stub that shows you were there. Slip and fall accidents
Dog bites in Mission Valley
California holds a dog's owner liable for a bite in a public place, or on private property where you were lawfully present, even if the dog never bit anyone before (Civil Code §3342). That covers a bite on a Mission Valley sidewalk, on a trail in the Mission Valley Preserve, or at an apartment or home you were invited into. Mission Valley is part of the City of San Diego, where San Diego Humane Society handles animal complaints and asks people reporting a dog bite to submit its online form before calling. File that report, and get the owner's name and phone number before you leave. Photograph the bite on the day it happens and again as it heals, so the record shows any scarring. Dog bites
Wrongful death claims for Mission Valley families
When a crash or fall in Mission Valley takes a life, California lets the surviving spouse or domestic partner and children bring a wrongful death claim. In some cases others, such as heirs or dependents, can bring one too (Code of Civil Procedure §377.60). The deadline is generally two years, or six months for a claim against a public entity. The San Diego Superior Court's ZIP code list labels 92108 as Mission Valley and assigns it to the Central Division, which hears civil cases at the Hall of Justice, 330 West Broadway. The consultation is free and our fee is a percentage of the settlement. If we do not win, you owe nothing: no attorney fee and no repayment of costs. Wrongful death
Brain injury claims after Mission Valley accidents
Head injuries from a crash on I-8 or Friars Road, or a fall at a Mission Valley shopping center, can seem mild at first and get worse over the following weeks. The CDC says some concussion symptoms may not appear for hours or days. If you were treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, UC San Diego Health in Hillcrest or Sharp Memorial Hospital, each a trauma center about 2 to 3 miles from Hazard Center, ask for copies of your imaging and records from that first visit. Insurers often argue a concussion has healed, so keep a dated log of your symptoms, treatment and missed work from the start. Brain injury
